Armand was the son of Émilie Lavergne, wife of Laurier's law partner. Armand's physical resemblance to Laurier caused gossip. Armand Lavergne was a strong French-Canadian nationalist. Like his mentor, Henri Bourassa, Lavergne was ahead of his time proposing in 1907 that English and French be treated equally in public matters.
